Cancun and Riviera Maya without cases of Coronavirus

Cancun and Riviera Maya remain safe for tourists, locals and welcome new events diverted to our destination because of COVID-19. The US CDC keeps the classification Green Level 1 for our destination which means there is no reason to pospone or cancel trips to Cancun and Riviera Maya where the current conditions are great for vacationing, the weather is sunny with temperature over 29°C (85°F) today as the spring is starting. The hotel occupancy from January to February has increased up to 5% being one of the favourite destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean.

Our government is being serious and cautious about this issue. The chief of the Health Bureau in our State (SESA -because of its Spanish acronym-), Alejandra Aguirre Crespo has had meetings with the Cancun International Airport Coordinating Commission and they together have currently stablished a procedure for prevention, detection and management of suspicious disease cases.

Coronavirus outbreak has also created worring conditions for the Travel and Tourism industries which could lead in damaging and lasting economic impact. Gloria Guevara, President & CEO of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) said "Previous cases [such as H1N1 influenza virus in 2009] have also shown us that closing airports, cancelling flights and closing borders often has a greater economic impact than the outbreak itself".

Normally, it important to keep ourselves informed of the places we will visit. This becomes even more important nowaways after this virus outbreak when we have tones of information of every type before making a travel decision. It is advisable to select sources of information which we trust and lead us to a better judgement; in addition, we have to be aware of the actions taken by the authorities in the destination we will go.

Recently, our area was on the spotlight for the arrival of a cruise ship in Cozumel Island in Mexico because a crew member had Influenza A. The executive chairman of MSC Cruises said showing gratitude for the excellent management Mexico had in the Meraviglia Cruise ship controversy:

”We would like to thank the Mexican authorities for their preventative health professionalism, which is the only way to demonstrate certainty to populations ashore, as well as to guests and crew on board,” said Vago, ”The disappointing decisions by Jamaica and Grand Cayman to bar our ship to allow our passengers to disembark and enjoy their islands was born out of fear, not best medical practice. This led to unnecessary and unjustifiable anxiety, not only for our passengers and crew on board, but right across the Caribbean’s tourism sector, and possibly even further beyond.”

OVID-19 current situation shows our country has substantially low case rates even compared with USA, Canada and other countries. According to the Healthy Bureau in Mexico, the idenfied cases in Mexico City and north the country have been treated and show mild symptoms.

Cases of Coronavirus outside China

Considering all explained above, it is clear that Mexico's Caribbean destinations are working tirelessly to ensure that risk levels are kept as low as possible and that any potential threat is minimized immediately through rapid detection and action protocols. We trust that these efforts will allow our destinations to continue receiving tourists from around the world during this time.
